WUMD 89.3 FM Shut-Down:
Time to Refuse, Rethink & Rebuild
On
WUMD 89.3 FM last hours, today, June 26, 2017, its wonderful people showed passion for music and radio, classy
acceptance of a bad deed for the South Coast community, and inspiring
compassion for each other in times of mourning the gag on FM airwaves! The poster above, hanging on a WUMD Studio A wall, caught my attention: it says it all.
WE
REFUSE the sale/donation, especially the unethical, undisclosed, and
undemocratic process by which the deal was signed, since no prior information
was revealed and no discussion or voting ever happened about the deal, among us
all, professors, staff, students, and WUMD members.
WE
RETHINK the way WUMD can help more people listen to on-line radio.
WE
REBUILD our trust in a better future other than this hovering frustration and sadness over the death of our 89.3 FM. The smiles and joy today at
the studio were not for the deal or the future! We celebrated our history and
our 42 years alliance of love and talent and goosebumps with the South Coast
community.
When about ten minutes of broadcasting
remained, silence and sorrow overcame us. They lingered within us. When the
General Manager spoke to our audience, and soon followed the protocol of
shutting the station off, I saw no one not crying. Let that be a statement for
the UMass Dartmouth to remember. Our listeners, in turn, will remember for a
long time when the radio died for them.
